Homestead Gardens

Homestead Gardens is a family-founded garden center established in 1973 by horticulturist Don Riddle Jr. What began as a small backyard business at the Riddle family home in Hyattsville, Maryland quickly grew thanks to Don’s passion for plants and his family’s long tradition of truck farming. Early success led the business to relocate to Davidsonville, Maryland, where Homestead Gardens continues to grow as a destination for gardeners and outdoor living enthusiasts.

Over the decades, Homestead Gardens expanded far beyond its original garden center roots. The company developed greenhouse production to supply plants to the retail store and local organizations, launched a landscape services division in 1980, and later introduced a wholesale production division to serve landscape contractors and provide plants and nursery stock for the store.

Today, Homestead Gardens is known for offering one of the largest selections of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs on the East Coast, along with landscaping services, outdoor décor, and garden-inspired gifts. Visitors can explore the expansive garden center nestled in the rolling countryside of Davidsonville, a space designed to inspire creativity, learning, and a deeper connection to gardening.

What started as a simple backyard venture has blossomed into a beloved Mid-Atlantic destination where plants, people, and community come together—continuing the legacy of Don Riddle’s vision to create more than a garden center, but a place where gardeners of all experience levels feel welcome and inspired.
